    T-BOSIET: Building Offshore Safety Competence In the oil and gas industry, safety is not just a set of procedures — it’s a core value embedded in every task we perform. For anyone working in offshore environments, one of the most essential foundations before stepping onto a platform is completing the T-BOSIET (Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training). Developed by OPITO (Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation), T-BOSIET is a globally recognized standard designed for personnel operating in tropical offshore regions. The training combines theoretical understanding with hands-on simulations to prepare participants for real-life emergency situations at sea. The program covers several key modules: 1. Safety Induction & Work Environment Introduction to offshore safety systems including permit-to-work processes, hazard identification, risk assessment, emergency procedures, and individual responsibility for maintaining a strong safety culture. 2. HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training) Perhaps the most intense and realistic part of the course. As shown in the photo, participants enter a helicopter simulator, equipped with a life jacket and rebreather, and experience a controlled scenario where the cabin submerges and inverts underwater. It’s a true test of composure, focus, and procedural discipline — learning to stay calm, locate exits, and escape safely. 3. Sea Survival & Emergency Situations Practical exercises in sea survival using liferafts, recognizing emergency signals, managing hypothermia, and coordinating rescue operations. 4. Firefighting & Self-Rescue Training on fire behavior, the use of breathing apparatus (BA), selecting appropriate extinguishing media, and performing safe evacuation in smoke-filled or hazardous areas. 5. Basic First Aid Covering essential first-response actions and medical support techniques in remote offshore environments. Every aspect of T-BOSIET reinforces one fundamental truth: safety is everyone’s responsibility. In offshore operations, there’s no such thing as a small mistake — every action, decision, and awareness contributes to collective safety. From my own experience, the HUET module left the deepest impression. The moment the simulator inverts underwater, instinct and preparation take over. You realize that safety isn’t just about compliance; it’s about discipline, teamwork, and readiness to respond under pressure. T-BOSIET is more than just a certificate — it’s a mindset. It reminds us that no job is so important that it cannot be done safely. Technical competence and safety competence must always go hand in hand.     Cyber Smart from the Start: Defending Finland’s Future in the Classroom Finland has long been celebrated for its world-class education system and commitment to digital innovation. But as technology becomes increasingly entwined with everyday life, new challenges are emerging—especially for the next generation. The rise of misinformation, cyberbullying, and online fraud means that teaching traditional subjects is no longer enough. Today’s students must be equipped with the tools to think critically, act safely, and defend themselves in the digital world. Disinformation campaigns, particularly from hostile foreign actors like Russia, have become more frequent and more sophisticated. These campaigns are not limited to military or political targets—they affect everyday citizens, manipulating emotions, distorting facts, and undermining democratic values. Finnish students must be taught how to recognize propaganda, question suspicious sources, and resist the temptation to share unverified information. But media literacy alone won’t cut it. Our young people also need to understand personal cybersecurity—from using secure passwords and avoiding phishing scams, to managing their online identity and digital footprint.     Emergency Procedures During Aircraft Refueling Operations Aircraft refueling is one of the most sensitive and high-risk ground operations in aviation maintenance. In this video, we can see how a small mistake — an improperly connected fuel hose — can quickly escalate into a serious safety incident. Once the hose valve was pushed in, fuel sprayed under high pressure, striking the technician and covering the surrounding area — a dangerous reminder of how crucial emergency preparedness and proper supervision are during fueling operations. Key Emergency and Safety Procedures: 1. Two-Person Operation: Refueling should never be conducted alone. At least two qualified technicians must be present — one operating the fueling system and another monitoring for leaks, grounding, and any irregularities. 2. Pre-Fueling Safety Checks: • Confirm proper bonding and grounding of the aircraft and fueling equipment. • Verify hose coupling integrity before opening the valve. • Ensure all valves and vents are positioned correctly. 3. Emergency Response Readiness: • A fire truck or fire extinguishing unit should always be on standby near the fueling area. • Spill kits and absorbent materials must be easily accessible. • Communication with the operations control or fire department should be immediate in the event of a spill or fire. 4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): • Safety goggles or face shields to protect from fuel spray. • Chemical-resistant gloves and anti-static clothing. • Proper footwear to prevent slips in case of fuel on the ramp. 5. Immediate Actions in Case of Fuel Spray or Spill: • Stop fueling immediately and close all valves. • Evacuate the area of unnecessary personnel. • Treat any eye or skin contact immediately with clean water and seek medical attention. • Contain and clean the spill using approved methods — never use water to wash it away. 6. Training and Continuous Improvement: Regular safety drills, procedural reviews, and team briefings are essential to ensure readiness and minimize the human factor risk in critical operations. Safety is not optional — it’s operational discipline. Every refueling task, no matter how routine it seems, deserves full attention, teamwork, and adherence to established procedures.

    275 MILLION STUDENTS. 9,000 SCHOOLS. ONE BREACH. AND IT'S HAPPENED TWICE. If your child uses Canvas, the learning management system trusted by universities and K-12 districts across the globe, their personal data may already be in the hands of cybercriminals. Instructure, the company behind Canvas LMS, has confirmed a major data breach. The ShinyHunters extortion gang is claiming responsibility, and the numbers are potentially staggering. What Was Exposed: 🔴 Names, email addresses, and student ID numbers 🔴 Private messages between students and teachers 🔴 Data tied to an estimated 275 million individuals 🔴 3.65 terabytes of exfiltrated data 🔴 Instructure's Salesforce instance — also compromised Here's what makes this worse: This is the second Instructure breach in less than eight months. ShinyHunters hit their Salesforce environment in September 2025, and now they're back. Same threat actor. Different attack vector. Same victims: your kids. In my 20 years with the Bureau, including years spent tracking cybercriminal networks, groups like ShinyHunters follow a ruthless and repeatable pattern. They don't disappear after a successful breach. They come back. Why? Because they already know the architecture. They've mapped the network, identified the weak points, and tested what works. When an organization gets hit twice by the same threat actor in under a year, that reveals a sad trutch: the root cause was never fully remediated. Patching the symptom isn't the same as closing the wound. And this time, the stakes couldn't be higher. We're not talking about compromised credit cards. We're talking about children's school records, private conversations, and student identities, data that can fuel phishing attacks, synthetic identity fraud, and social engineering campaigns targeting families for years. ✅ If Your Child's School Uses Canvas — Do This Now: 1️⃣ Watch for phishing. Expect targeted emails pretending to be from your school, Canvas, or "account security teams." Delete and report them. 2️⃣ Monitor your child's email account for suspicious login activity or password reset requests they didn't initiate. 3️⃣ Talk to your kids about not clicking links in emails, even ones that look like they're from teachers or classmates. 4️⃣ Contact your school district and ask what notifications are coming and what steps they're taking under FERPA obligations. 5️⃣ Consider a credit freeze for minors with Social Security numbers — yes, kids can be victims of identity theft too. ShinyHunters has issued a "pay or leak" ultimatum with a deadline of May 6th. Whether Instructure pays or doesn't, the data is already out there — and threat actors don't return what they steal. The education sector has become one of the most targeted industries in cybercrime — and our children are paying the price. #KnowledgeisProtection.

    The DfE has updated its cyber security standard for schools and colleges. The changes have been made to reflect the 2026 Cyber Essentials updates. The big one - MFA has moved from “senior leaders and staff handling sensitive data” to something much broader. The updated wording now says MFA must be enabled for: • all staff accounts with access to cloud services or on-site systems • IT administrative accounts For many schools, this means checking more than Microsoft 365. It means looking at MIS access, safeguarding systems, finance platforms, HR systems, remote access, admin accounts, cloud services and any other system staff use to access school data. The password wording has also been tightened. Users need unique credentials before accessing devices, the network and services. Passwords must be unique to the user, protected from unauthorised access and backed by technical controls that reduce the risk of compromise. There are also stronger references to approved applications, secure configuration, IoT devices, firewall protection and custom-built applications. The 14-day vulnerability fix requirement is still there too. Critical or high-risk fixes need to be dealt with within 14 days of release. This is not just an IT job. We can push out the updates, but staff need to reboot their devices to apply them. My take on these updates is that Cyber Essentials may not be compulsory for most schools, but the DfE standard is clearly moving closer to it. Schools and trusts that treat this as a once-a-year tick box will struggle. Schools and trusts that build MFA, patching, backups, account reviews and secure configuration into normal routines will be in a much better place. Calm, practical, evidence-based cyber security. That is where schools need to be heading.

    The Canvas data breach made me reflect on something I’ve been observing for a while. In the AI Preparedness Surveys we have run with the Association of School Business Administrators (ASBA) and Independent Schools of New Zealand, schools consistently rate their cybersecurity maturity higher than their data governance maturity. They then rate their data governance maturity higher than their ability to maintain up-to-date software registers. That should make every school leader pause. Because the logic runs the other way. If your software register is not up to date, you may not know what systems, apps, platforms, extensions and AI tools are being used across the school. If you don’t know what software is being used, you may not know where student, staff, parent and operational data is being stored, shared or integrated. And if you don’t know where your data is, your cybersecurity posture has a blind spot. The Canvas breach is a timely reminder that schools are no longer just managing their own systems. They are managing a growing ecosystem of third-party platforms, cloud tools, learning technologies, AI-enabled applications and integrations. Bring Anthropic’s Mythos into the picture, and this becomes even more urgent. The key issue is not whether schools are currently using Mythos. They are not. The issue is what Mythos represents: AI systems are becoming far more capable at identifying and exploiting software vulnerabilities. That means the speed, scale and sophistication of cyber risk is increasing. To put it simply. You cannot govern what you cannot see. And you cannot secure what you have not governed. For example, using a calm tone, maintaining non-threatening body language, and providing structured support can help students navigate challenges without feeling overwhelmed. When students experience patience and empathy from educators, they are more likely to engage positively, take ownership of their actions, and build resilience. Ultimately, de-escalation is not just about managing behavior it’s about cultivating an environment where every learner feels safe, heard, and capable of growth. When educators embrace these strategies, they transform classrooms into spaces of empowerment, fostering emotional intelligence and strengthening relationships that support lifelong learning.

    The National Academies released a consensus report on school #activeshooter drills and how to mitigate risks to mental, emotional, and behavioral health. I was honored to be invited to testify to the committee as one of the panelists. High-level highlights of what it says: 🔍 The research is mixed and limited: drills can boost preparedness, but they also raise fear/anxiety for some students—especially those with prior trauma or disabilities. 🧠 Do this: trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate, well-announced drills; plan with a multidisciplinary team; debrief; check on vulnerable students; integrate with a positive school climate. 🔺 Don’t do this: no hyper-realistic simulations, no high-sensory elements, no deception. 👉 Policy/practice: publish national guidelines; fund better research; ensure school health staff monitor students; require specialized training for officers in schools (#SROs). 🔍 Bottom line for #schoolleaders: prepare people without harming them—and put climate, clarity, and care at the center of #schoolsafety and #schoolsecurity.     🚨🚨 KCSIE 2026: What school leaders need to know The DfE has published the draft Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2026 statutory guidance for consultation with schools and colleges invited to respond by 22 April 2026: https://lnkd.in/ei28zXDg It reflects substantive updates to strengthen safeguarding practice, clarify responsibilities, and respond to evolving risks. ✅ 1. Statutory gender questioning guidance - One of the most significant changes is the integration of guidance on supporting children who are questioning their gender directly into KCSIE. The aim is to embed clear safeguarding expectations into the statutory framework rather than rely on separate non-statutory advice. Under the draft: ▶️ Schools should take a 'very careful' and evidence-based approach when a child requests a social transition. ▶️ No action should be initiated by schools. Guidance only applies where a child or parent raises the issue. ▶️ Parental involvement is expected in the vast majority of cases. ▶️ Primary settings should exercise particular caution and rare use of full social transitioning. ▶️ Schools must retain single-sex facilities (toilets, changing rooms, boarding accommodation, sports) with no exceptions ✅ 2. Wider safeguarding proposed updates - While the gender guidance has understandably attracted attention, the draft also proposes broader updates across KCSIE that reflect contemporary safeguarding pressures: ▶️ Expanded mental health links: Mental health concerns are more clearly positioned as potential indicators of abuse, exploitation or self-harm risk, reinforcing the universal safeguarding role of staff. ▶️ Online safety: The online safety section has been reorganised around four risk areas - content, contact, conduct and commerce; with new references to generative AI guidance and resources. Schools are also reminded of expectations around mobile-phone-free environments by default where appropriate. ▶️ DSL cover arrangements clarified: Guidance now highlights the need for robust arrangements when DSLs are unavailable, including shared systems for reporting and monitoring concerns. ▶️ Updates to information sharing: There is stronger emphasis on sharing safeguarding information effectively with multi-agency partners; including when children move between schools to support continuity of protection. ▶️ Child Exploitation and violence: Proposed changes extend advice on grooming gangs, serious violence and weapons, along with Operation Encompass and misogyny, further embedding these concerns within everyday safeguarding duties.
