    Universities should be among the most exciting brands in the world. So why aren't they? That’s the central question of this excellent new report by Firehaus and Education Marketer. The findings offer a constructive look at the systems that are keeping many university brands shallow, siloed, and stuck. Some insights that stand out: 🔹Universities know what good branding looks like. 70% say consistency is essential, 63% want true differentiation, and 61% value emotional storytelling. But only 15% have a differentiated position, and just 24% use storytelling in practice 🔹Brand is still treated as marketing’s job, not a shared responsibility. 67% say brand is seen as “owned” by marketing, while only 23% report meaningful leadership involvement 🔹Academic staff are missing from the conversation. Faculty are seen as critical to brand success, but most are excluded. This is a missed opportunity. Students often form their strongest emotional bonds through teaching and research, yet brand-building rarely connects with the academic experience. 🔹Authenticity is non-negotiable. The report makes clear that branding must be lived, not just launched. Staff alignment and internal engagement are some of the most neglected areas despite being crucial to credibility. If the brand doesn’t show up in the day-to-day experience of students and staff, it won't stick externally. 🔹Risk aversion kills distinctiveness. Institutions dilute bold ideas out of fear of scrutiny, of being seen as unserious, or of stepping outside the comfort zone of sector norms. The result? Vanilla brands that blend in, even when their underlying stories are extraordinary. So what can universities do? 🔹Stop treating the brand superficially. The brand is a strategic asset that must be embedded in behaviour, not just communications. 🔹Bring academic and student voices into the centre as co-authors of the institutional narrative. 🔹Invest internally. Culture is the brand. If staff aren’t living it, students won’t believe it. 🔹Be brave. The raw ingredients for great university brands are already here: research with global relevance, student stories with emotional punch, alumni with impact, and missions that matter. But they need to be expressed with clarity, humanity, and ambition. This report offers a hopeful analysis for the future of HE branding. The path is there.     Teachers are told to differentiate. No one shows them what it actually looks like. So let me make this concrete. No theory. No buzzwords. Just real classrooms on a regular school day. Here is what differentiation actually looks like in practice. → Tiered assignments. One group practices the core skill with guidance while another applies the same concept to a real-world problem. → Choice boards. Students show understanding by writing, building, recording, or presenting instead of all submitting the same worksheet. → Flexible grouping. A student works independently today, in a skill group tomorrow, and as a peer coach next week. → Learning stations. One table practices with manipulatives, one works directly with the teacher, one tackles a challenge task. → Anchor activities. Early finishers extend learning instead of waiting or distracting others. → Compacting. A student who already mastered the content skips repetition and moves straight to deeper work. → Scaffolded notes. Some students get sentence starters while others generate their own summaries. → Varied texts. Everyone studies the same topic using texts at different reading levels. → Open-ended tasks. Students solve the same problem using different strategies and explain their thinking. → Multiple entry points. A lesson begins with a story, a visual, or a question so no learner starts locked out. This is not chaos. This is intentional design. Differentiation is how we respect brain diversity without lowering expectations. It is how we prevent boredom and overwhelm from turning into disengagement. If learning is not flexible, equity never will be. Teach students.     Many programs still treat PhD training as strictly academic apprenticeship. But the value of the PhD is much more than that—and helping students recognize that value across contexts is a game changer. This semester I taught a seminar on professional futures for humanities PhD students. All of them said it should be required across all programs—not because of résumé tips, but because they learned to see themselves, the institutions around them, and the job market differently. Two things made it different: First, we compared academic and non-academic pathways head-to-head—the discourses, the languages, the logics. Not "Plan A vs. Plan B," but different systems with different rules. Second, students applied the skills they already have to their own navigation—reading organizations as texts, analyzing power structures, building coherent narratives about their work. We treated job postings and organizational websites like primary sources. We examined career advice critically—not just "network" or "tailor your résumé," but how relationships actually function and how to build materials strategically. Shout out to Ivette Mekdessi, M.Ed., Director of Career Development and Counseling at Rice's Center for Career Development, who delivered an amazing workshop on behavioral interviews tailored to humanities PhD students—one of the course highlights. When PhD students see the full value of their training—not just the academic slice—they feel empowered and start making active choices. They have a plan for what comes next. And that matters for time to degree too—students who can see their options don't linger in programs because they don't know what else to do. They're eager for the off-ramp.     Bangladesh’s education system needs a serious reevaluation. For years, universities have adopted Outcome-Based Education (OBE) as a method to improve quality and accountability. However, despite all the paperwork, the gap between what graduates know and what the job market needs keeps growing. A recent decision by the Communication University of China provides an insightful example. The university has chosen to stop admitting students into several majors, including translation, sociology, and photography, because of the rising impact of artificial intelligence. Instead of eliminating these fields completely, they are combining them into broader, technology-focused programs. Many universities across China are updating their curricula to match new areas like AI, data science, and digital media. In contrast, Bangladesh is trapped in a one-size-fits-all approach. In practice, OBE often turns education into a bureaucratic task focused on mapping outcomes, overlooking the key differences between fields. A literature student should not be judged the same way as an engineer, and a creative arts program should not follow the same strict measures as computer science. The way forward is to embrace differentiation. Each subject should have its own criteria. STEM fields need to emphasize practical skills and industry experience. Social sciences should concentrate on analytical depth and relevance to policy. Humanities should foster critical thinking, while creative subjects require flexible, portfolio-based assessments. It is also crucial to rethink outdated programs. This doesn’t mean getting rid of the arts or social sciences; it involves modernizing them by incorporating technology, data, and interdisciplinary methods. BBA and MBA programs don’t need regurgitating facts but a practical approach. In the end, Bangladesh must transition from a focus on compliance to fostering creativity. Reform requires more than just frameworks; it needs the bravery to question what is taught, how it is taught, and why. Without such changes, universities risk preparing students for a world that no longer exists.

    𝐎𝐍 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇 𝐃𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐇 In recent years, I’ve observed that examiners often apply varying standards when evaluating research at different academic levels, sometimes leading to confusion and misaligned expectations for both students and supervisors. Based on my academic observations and supervisory experience, the distinction in research expectations is evident in 4 key stages: 𝟏. 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒉: Introductory. 𝑭𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔: Basic application of research methods; replication or small-scale exploratory studies. 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆: Highly structured with close supervision; topic often assigned or tightly scoped. 𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒑𝒖𝒕: Short research report or final year project. 𝑬𝒙𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆: Exploring the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance among first-year students. 𝟐. 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 (𝐌𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞) 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒉: Basic to moderate. 𝑭𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔: Practical application of theories to real-world problems; guided research with clear parameters. 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆: Coursework-driven with a final research project. 𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒑𝒖𝒕: Limited-scope project with applied orientation. 𝑬𝒙𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆: Assessing the effectiveness of mindfulness training in reducing test anxiety. 𝟑. 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 (𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞) 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒉: Moderate to high. 𝑭𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔: Independent investigation of a psychological issue with theoretical engagement. 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆: Full thesis; student-led topic development and design. 𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒑𝒖𝒕: A comprehensive study with potential academic value. 𝑬𝒙𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆: Investigating cognitive distortions as mediators in the link between childhood trauma and depressive symptoms. 𝟒. 𝐏𝐡𝐃 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒉: Very high. 𝑭𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔: Original contribution to psychological theory or methodology; complex and multi-layered. 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆: Fully independent, with supervisory mentorship. 𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒑𝒖𝒕: Multi-study or longitudinal research with academic publication potential. 𝑬𝒙𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆: Proposing and validating a new integrative model of adolescent emotion regulation in multicultural contexts. This simple guide outlines how I believe research depth should ideally develop across programmes, with the aim of supporting both students and supervisors in setting realistic expectations.     This year, as part of my whole-school leadership role, I had the privilege of closely observing teaching strategies and student learning experiences across all stages, from Early Years to Sixth Form. The contrast in how students engage and how teachers adapt their methods to suit developmental needs is both fascinating and essential to understand. A recurring theme in teacher feedback is the emphasis on differentiation. While this is widely acknowledged, what truly makes a difference is providing teachers with focused coaching tailored to the age group they are working with, enabling them to implement differentiation effectively. In the Foundation Stage, the best practices revolve around play-based learning. Structured carpet time followed by purposeful play helps connect students to the lesson while maintaining engagement. Teachers create stimulating environments with sensory materials that encourage exploration and curiosity, plan artistic experiences to foster creativity, and design opportunities for pretend play to build imagination and communication skills. Physical play, manipulative tasks, and problem-solving activities also play a vital role in developing motor skills and cognitive abilities. Balancing child-led initiatives with educator-supported learning ensures that each child is engaged meaningfully while encouraging independence. These strategies, combined with modelling social rules like fairness and turn-taking, create a nurturing and effective learning environment. Differentiation evolves to focus on meeting students' diverse engagement capacities. Time-differentiated activities that align with attention spans help maintain focus and ensure a sense of urgency without overwhelming students. Considering these factors, teachers who plan tasks carefully achieve higher levels of student attainment. Additionally, managing classroom movement and fostering task behaviour are crucial. For example, in a science lesson, I observed a teacher effectively implementing a peer-support model by designating students as “experts of the day,” allowing others to seek help. While highly effective for that lesson, this dynamic approach required thoughtful planning and an understanding of student abilities. These observations underline the importance of tailoring teaching strategies to the developmental stage of learners. Differentiation is not just about adjusting the difficulty of tasks but about understanding how students learn, engage, and grow. By continuously observing, gathering data, and having meaningful conversations with students, teachers can make impactful adjustments that enhance learning experiences. Across all stages, the key lies in innovative planning, fostering engagement, and sharing best practices to support student success.

    𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙨𝙮𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙪𝙨. 𝙏𝙬𝙤 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨. 𝘿𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙝𝙨. For years, we have expected every child to engage with Mathematics in the same way—same pace, same depth, same expectations. The CBSE Secondary Curriculum 2026–27 quietly shifts this assumption. From Classes IX–X onwards, Mathematics is now offered at two levels: Standard and Advanced. This is not merely a structural adjustment. It reflects a deeper acknowledgement that learning need not be uniform to be meaningful. Standard Mathematics is designed for all learners, with a focus on essential concepts, clarity, and application in real-life contexts. Mathematics Advanced, on the other hand, extends beyond the core, engaging students in greater depth, abstraction, and higher-order thinking. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. The level a student chooses will define the depth of assessment and be reflected in certification. This also places a new responsibility on schools—not just to teach content, but to guide choices with sensitivity and insight, ensuring that pathways are aligned with interest, readiness, and future direction. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙚𝙩, 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚. Earlier, CBSE introduced Basic and Standard Mathematics at the Class X level. The differentiation, however, was largely at the point of examination. Earlier, the pathway was common and the assessment varied. Now, the pathway itself is differentiated, and the assessment follows.
