Someone, presumably Rozanov, is seated on the edge of the bed, holding the camera. Between his spread thighs, kneeling with his hands folded neatly in his lap and his eyes half-lidded, is Shane.
Hayden’s spoon slips from his fingers, clattering against the table, a sticky smear of vanilla arcing across the worn, crayon-stained wood.

“Ilya?”
“Don’t freak out,” he says, and immediately continuing, knowing just saying not to freak out will make him freak out, “I had sex with Hayden’s wife.”
Shane’s eyes bug out. “Just now!?”
“No! Not just — years, years ago,” Ilya says.
“Oh my god,” Shane says. He covers his face with his hands, dragging them down slowly, then looks at the ceiling. “Oh my god. Hayden’s gonna kill you.”
“Shane!”
“I’m sorry!”

In a universe in which Shane is conceived while his parents are in college much stays the same, but much changes too:
David Hollander is a professional level goalie, but gives up that dream to raise Shane, instead becoming the Centaurs’ emergency backup goalie.
Shane is diagnosed with autism, trusts Ilya with his diagnosis, and they get together sooner.

Please baby, don’t cry.” Ilya roughly wiped at his cheeks with a bed sheet. He was no longer crying, but his eyebrows were arched so high they nearly merged into his hairline.

Ilya wakes up in a hospital bed with a splitting headache and surrounded by Hollanders. The last time Ilya remembers seeing Shane Hollander, he was running away from Ilya's Boston home.

Summary
Ilya, against his better judgement, is in yet another boring midsize SUV and on the way to none other than Shane’s parents cabin.
Ilya knows almost nothing about these people. He knows Yuna abstractly. She is an excellent manager, cut throat, a force to be reckoned with, and the woman who singlehandedly secured the majority of Shane’s impressive sponsorship portfolio.
What he does not know, and what feels most important, is how the Hollander’s are going to take to the “gay son fucking his rival thing”. To be entirely fair, it’s a lot to absorb in an afternoon. But Ilya is not concerned with protecting the delicate constitutions of the elder Hollanders. Ilya is worried about protecting Shane. Supporting Shane. Showing Shane he chose correctly when he chose Ilya, despite everything that might point to otherwise.
And so, Ilya is resolute in his decision. No matter what happens, no matter what they say, he will focus on one thing: protect Shane.
