Are we using AI to supercharge outdated assessment models or to build something genuinely better? Assessment and accountability matter, arguably more than ever. Yet parents, teachers, and policymakers are reasonably frustrated with assessment systems that take too much time away from instruction and deliver too little value back to the students and teachers in exchange. The answer isn’t to care less about results. It’s to test better. And today, for the first time, we have the tools to do that. In this new op-ed, former Tennessee Commissioner of Education Penny Lee (Schwinn) and I outline a path for replacing end-of-year accountability assessments with smarter accountability: assessment models that generate information teachers can act on instantly, identify struggling students before they fall too far behind, and give families a clear and current picture of where their children stand. The federal government has opened the door. States should walk through it. https://lnkd.in/ezq6Qi4c ISTE #ISTEASCD #Assessment

Consistency and connection can transform a student's educational experience. "Porcupine" students, those who may push back or protect themselves, often need support and belonging the most. Educator Kelsey McCall opens up about supporting a student who needs consistency, and she’s turning to the educator community for help. How can we equip staff with the right language and daily routines to build trust? 📖 For deeper strategies on supporting students who struggle with behavioral challenges, read “Hugging Porcupines” by Mike Anderson: https://hubs.li/Q04t25gq0 #EducationLeadership #TeacherSupport #ProfessionalDevelopment
